Bonneville Power Administration Diagnostic Savings Measurement Project
This project focuses on measuring the energy impacts resulting from installation and use of a smart monitoring and diagnostic system (SMDS) for packaged heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. The project leverages a much larger effort funded by the Office of the Washington State Attorney General in which the SMDS will be installed on 150 to 200 packaged HVAC units by HVAC contractors trained as part of that project. The project funded by BPA focuses on measuring in a statistically meaningful way the energy savings achieved from use of this system by providing for pre-SMDS-installation energy use monitoring of a sample of 50 HVAC units, as well as analysis of the energy savings achieved from unit servicing and use of the SMDS. The result will be the first statistically valid measurement of energy savings in the field resulting from the use of automated diagnostics for packaged HVAC equipment.
